Gleaners
The women’s group of Zion actually began as the Friendly Circle in the late 1960’s. The women met for a short Bible study and social time. From the Friendly Circle grew another group of ladies who began to call themselves “The Gleaners.”
Throughout the years, the Gleaners and the Friendly Circle continued to work together and support each other and Zion. In 1999, the two groups decided to merge back together and continue as The Gleaners.
The Gleaners are always doing something to help raise money to support the church. Some of those events include: spring and fall bazaars, bake sales, soup sales, apple dumpling sales, cookbooks, Easter eggs, and many other things. Along the way, the Gleaners organized and served others through various programs like: congregational dinners, funeral luncheons, donations for families in need, flowers to homebound and hospitalized members, school kits through Lutheran World Relief, as well as many other activities.
The Gleaners also know how to have fun! They enjoy Christmas parties, dinner theaters, spring banquets, Spring Flings, shopping trips and the annual picnic.
The Gleaners have supported the church and its ministry through their monetary donations by purchasing flower vase liners, choir robes, copiers, computers, carpet, pulpit Bibles, altar linens, and sponsored youth campers on mission trips.
In addition, for more than 20 years, the Gleaners saved for a new church building. In 2003/2004 the Gleaners gave over $60,000 to the Building Fund. In appreciation, the church council named the new social hall “Gleaners Hall.”
This group is open to any and all women who would like to participate. Meetings are held at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month – September through May.
